How to Identify an Immobilizer Problem:
- Symptom:
- Car starts and runs but shuts off immediately.
- “Car in key” symbol lit on the dashboard.
- Possible fault code in the ECU: P1570 or 17978 (“Engine start blocked by immobilizer”).
- Misconceptions:
- If the car does not start at all, it’s not an immobilizer issue.
- Immobilizer issues won’t cause rough running or stalling during driving.
What is an Immobilizer?
The immobilizer allows the engine to run with the correct key. A faulty immobilizer will cause the car to shut off right after starting. An immobilizer delete reprograms the ECU to ignore the immobilizer function, allowing the car to run even if the immobilizer is defective.
Reasons for Immobilizer Delete:
- Lost or extra car key triggers the immobilizer.
- Costly and inconvenient dealer reprogramming.
- Adding a remote start feature.
- Replacing a bad ECU with a used one (we can duplicate data from the original ECU).
Additional Notes:
- The dashboard light may still blink if the problem is caused by other components like a broken antenna receiver or a faulty ignition switch.
- For AUDI A4 Quattro owners (03-07) with ECU part numbers starting with 8E0, the car alarm will activate for 4 minutes after starting the car. We cannot disable the factory alarm with the immo delete but can retrieve the pin code for adapting a new ECU and keys.
