Mercedes Central Gateway (ZGW / CGW / Zentrales Gateway) Clone Service
Yes, you can clone a Mercedes Central Gateway. The Mercedes Central Gateway — labeled ZGW, ZGS, CGW, or Zentrales Gateway depending on chassis — is the central communication hub that routes data between every CAN/MOST network in your Mercedes-Benz. It stores your VIN, mileage, ASSYST service history, coding. A simple swap with a used or new unprogrammed unit will not work: the car will throw communication faults, odometer discrepancies, and in many cases a no-start condition.
Our mail-in clone service transfers all of that data from your original gateway to a matching donor module, so the replacement comes back to you Plug-and-Play (“Plug n’ Drive”). No dealer trip. No DAS XENTRY / Star Diagnosis programming. No online SCN coding required.

- Cloning process: We read VIN, mileage, ASSYST service counters, and other coding data from your original module, write that data to the donor module, and verify the write.
- Return shipment: The verified-write donor module is shipped back to you, ready to install.
Common Mercedes-Benz Gateway (ZGW) Issues
Gateway modules fail for several reasons. Below are the most common problems:
- Water Damage / Flooded Module: Often caused by vehicle leaks or flood exposure. Requires VIN, mileage, and service data transfer.
- No Key Recognition / Key Programming Issues: The Gateway does not store key data — keys live in the EIS / EZS module. But if the Gateway fails, the car can show a no-start condition because the EZS, ECU, and other control units cannot communicate through it. Replacing the failed Gateway with a cloned donor restores communication and the car starts again with your existing keys.
- VIN & Odometer Transfer Problems: Replacement modules may show incorrect VIN or mileage. Cloning ensures correct vehicle identity and odometer integrity.
- Service Data / ASSYST Errors: Oil change counters, service interval data, and maintenance schedules may reset or become incorrect.
- ASSYST+ Countdown Issues: Main odometer and ASSYST+ counters may desync, causing maintenance notifications to fail.
- Module Corruption / Internal Software Failure: Flash or EEPROM corruption can prevent communication with vehicle networks.
- Communication Errors Across Vehicle Networks: BCM, ECU, and instrument cluster may lose communication, causing warning lights or malfunctioning convenience systems.
- Aftermarket or Salvage Module Replacement: Salvage modules often have wrong VIN or service data that doesn’t match the host vehicle.
- Electrical Damage: Short circuits, overvoltage, or bad fuses can damage internal circuits.
- IMMO / Security Lockout Issues: Vehicle may not start because the gateway can’t route communication between modules — the gateway itself doesn’t store keys, but the EZS, ECU, and other control units cannot talk to each other through a failed gateway.

FAQs
- Q: Can you clone a flooded Gateway?
A: Yes, we can transfer all necessary data to a new or used replacement unit. - Q: Do I need to send my original keys?
A: No. The Mercedes Gateway does not store key or immobilizer data — those live in the EIS / EZS ignition switch module. Your existing keys are unaffected by gateway cloning and keep working after the clone is installed. - Q: What is the turnaround time?
A: Typically 24 hrs depending on module condition and shipping.

Programming, Cloning, or Coding — what’s the difference?
Three different jobs the Mercedes Gateway can need, depending on whether you’re using a used module or a new blank module:
- Gateway cloning (what we do) — transfers VIN, mileage, ASSYST, and coding from your original module to a matched used donor module. Returns Plug-and-Play.
- Gateway programming — installs the factory software variant onto a new blank module. Normally requires the dealer’s DAS XENTRY tool and an online SCN (Software Calibration Number) code.
- Gateway coding — sets the module’s variant configuration so it matches your car’s options (transmission type, regional spec, factory accessories). Usually done at the dealer with XENTRY.
Cloning bypasses programming and coding for almost every case where you have a working donor module. That’s why it’s the standard repair path used by independent shops and Mercedes specialists.
The #1 cause of Mercedes Gateway failure: flood / water damage
Flood and water intrusion is the number-one cause of Mercedes Gateway module failure. Once a flooded gateway corrodes internally it usually stops communicating with diagnostic scanners — but a no-comm module on the car is not a dead module on our bench. We read the microprocessor (MPU) directly at chip level using EEPROM and flash tools, and roughly 99 out of 100 flooded gateways still let us recover the original VIN, mileage, ASSYST service history, and coding data intact.
In the rare case where the original memory is physically destroyed and unreadable, we can still complete the clone manually. We write the VIN to match your car, set the mileage to your current vehicle reading, and populate the ASSYST service record so it matches the original. The cloned donor module installs and starts the car normally.
Pricing — about half the typical US Mercedes-specialist rate
Our Mercedes Gateway clone service is priced at approximately half what most US-based Mercedes-specialist shops charge for the same data transfer. Same chip-level MPU work, same VIN / mileage / ASSYST recovery, fast bench turnaround — at half the price. Mercedes module cloning is what we do every day, not a side line, so we can run a deeper service for less.
Years of bench-level experience — proven on our YouTube channel
This isn’t a side service for us. We’ve been cloning Mercedes Central Gateway, EIS / EZS, SAM, and other Mercedes modules at the bench level at Karman Auto for 25 years — long enough that we have trained other technicians and shops on the same MPU read / write process. Our VEHIX411 YouTube channel documents the work, documenting Karman Auto’s 25 years of bench experience, with content showing every step on real Mercedes modules — proof of how long we’ve been doing this. When you ship your module to Karman Auto, you’re sending it to the same hands other shops learn from.
Other common Mercedes Gateway failure symptoms
- No communication / OBD-II won’t connect — your scan tool fails to link. The gateway is the OBD bridge, so when it’s offline, nothing can be diagnosed.
- No-start condition — engine cranks but the ignition / immobilizer data cannot route between modules.
- Dashboard goes blank or partial — instrument cluster loses CAN data from the gateway.
- Dead windows, dead mirrors, dead seats — control units beyond the gateway lose comms.
- Odometer / ASSYST mismatch after a swap — caused by installing a used module without cloning the data over first.
- CAN bus errors stored in every module — symptom of gateway failure rather than individual module failure.
Mercedes Gateway location by chassis
The Mercedes Central Gateway is in different physical locations depending on the chassis. This service covers the standalone Mercedes Gateway / ZGW / CGW unit on:
- W203 (2000–2007 C-Class)
- W211 (2003–2009 E-Class)
- W212 (2010–2016 E-Class) — standalone ZGW unit, mounted near the dashboard
- W219 (2005–2010 CLS)
- W221 (2007–2013 S-Class) — standalone ZGW, primary CAN/MOST hub
- W164 / W251 (ML/R-Class)
- R171 / R230 (SLK / SL)
- Sprinter and Vito vans using the same gateway architecture
W204 (2008–2014 C-Class) is different: the Central Gateway function is integrated into the Front SAM (Signal Acquisition and Actuation Module) inside the engine bay, not a standalone ZGW unit. For W204 use our Mercedes Front SAM module clone service.
No DAS XENTRY, Star Diagnosis, or SCN coding required after install
Once we clone your data onto the donor module, the replacement is fully matched to your VIN, immobilizer, and configuration. You install it the same way you’d install any other Mercedes module. There is no dealer-side step. No DAS XENTRY tool, no Star Diagnosis Compact, no SCN online coding, no Mercedes Login Token. The original keys keep working.
What to send with your Mercedes Gateway clone order
- Your original (failed) Mercedes Gateway module — labeled “ORIGINAL”
- A matching used donor module with the same part number on the case — labeled “DONOR.” Verify the part-number sticker before shipping. Mismatched part numbers cannot be cloned together.
- A note with your VIN, current vehicle mileage, and a contact phone or email
If you’re unsure about whether your donor part number matches, email a photo of both module labels to support before shipping and we’ll confirm compatibility first.
Mercedes Gateway / ZGW — Frequently Asked Questions
Can you clone a Mercedes Gateway module?
Yes. Karman Auto clones any standalone Mercedes Central Gateway (ZGW / CGW / Zentrales Gateway) nationwide by mail-in. We transfer VIN, mileage, ASSYST service data, and configuration coding from your original gateway to a matching donor — 27 years of bench-level Mercedes work since 1999.
What is the difference between ZGW, CGW, and Zentrales Gateway?
All three are Mercedes-Benz terms for the same Central Gateway module. ZGW (Zentrales Gateway) is the German engineering name. CGW (Central Gateway) is the English service-manual term. Mercedes also uses ZGS on some chassis. All refer to the central CAN/MOST communication hub that routes data between vehicle networks.
Will the cloned Mercedes Gateway be plug-and-play?
Yes. After cloning, the donor Gateway carries your VIN, mileage, ASSYST history, and coding. Install it in your car and it functions immediately. No dealer programming step is needed.
Do I need DAS XENTRY or SCN coding after a Mercedes Gateway clone?
No. The clone copies all the data the dealer would otherwise have to program. No DAS XENTRY, no Star Diagnosis, no SCN online coding, no Mercedes Login Token. The donor Gateway works directly.
Why does the donor Mercedes Gateway have to have the same part number?
The internal flash and EEPROM memory layout is tied to the Mercedes Gateway part number. A donor with a different part number has a different memory map and cannot accept the cloned data correctly. Verify the part-number sticker before shipping.
Can you clone a flooded or water-damaged Mercedes Gateway?
Yes. Flood damage is the #1 cause of Mercedes Gateway failure. Even when the gateway won’t communicate, we read the microprocessor (MPU) directly at chip level using EEPROM and flash tools. Roughly 99 of 100 flooded gateways still let us recover the original VIN, mileage, ASSYST, and coding intact. If the chip is physically destroyed (rare), we can clone manually using your VIN and current mileage.
Will my old keys still work after Mercedes Gateway cloning?
Yes. The Mercedes Central Gateway does not hold your key or immobilizer data — that lives in the EIS / EZS ignition switch module. Cloning the gateway doesn’t touch your keys. However, if your gateway is failing, the car may show a no-start condition because EZS, ECU, and other modules can’t communicate through it. Replacing with a cloned donor restores communication and the car starts with your existing keys.
How is Mercedes Gateway cloning different from EIS / EZS cloning?
Different modules, different data. The EIS / EZS (Elektronisches Zündschloss) is the ignition switch module that stores your key data and immobilizer pairing. The Gateway is the communication hub that routes data between networks. They’re independent — gateway failure doesn’t usually require EIS work, and EIS failure doesn’t require gateway work. We service both separately.
What if my Mercedes Gateway has lost all communication with the scan tool?
A no-communication gateway in the vehicle is not a dead gateway on the bench. We read the gateway’s MPU directly at chip level even when it won’t respond to OBD-II or Star Diagnosis. That’s how we recover VIN, mileage, and ASSYST data from gateways that are completely unresponsive in the car.
Can you clone a Mercedes Gateway on a W221 S-Class?
Yes. The W221 S-Class (2007-2013) uses a standalone Mercedes Central Gateway that serves as the primary CAN/MOST hub. We routinely clone W221 gateways. Same process as other chassis — VIN, mileage, ASSYST, and coding transfer to a matching donor.
Does Mercedes Gateway cloning work on Sprinter vans?
Yes. Mercedes Sprinter and Vito vans use the same gateway architecture as passenger Mercedes-Benz vehicles. We clone Sprinter gateways using the same bench process. Same donor-matching requirements apply.
Will my ASSYST service data transfer with the Mercedes Gateway clone?
Yes. Your ASSYST and ASSYST+ service counters — oil change interval, service hours, maintenance reminders — are part of the cloned data. After install, your service intervals continue exactly where they were before the gateway failed.
How long does the mail-in Mercedes Gateway clone service take?
Typical bench turnaround is 24-72 hours from when we receive both modules. We ship back the same day cloning is complete. Karman Auto has been doing Mercedes module bench work since 1999 — 27 years of documented experience, longer than most shops in this niche.
Is the W204 C-Class Gateway the same as a regular Mercedes ZGW?
No. On W204 C-Class (2008-2014), the Central Gateway function is integrated into the Front SAM (Signal Acquisition Module) in the engine bay, not a standalone ZGW unit. For W204 customers, see our Mercedes Front SAM Clone Service. All other listed chassis use a standalone gateway covered by this page.

Everything was as advertised. If I were to make any suggestion it would be to offer an option for faster shipping options. I found being without my car for a week+ to be a bit too long. Maybe a module exchange option could speed things up too.

My 2010 ML350 was flooded and my gateway control module along with the stereo amplifier were destroyed. I purchased a matching# module off of E-bay and sent it along with my module, which showed signs of electrical arcing, to Karmanauto. Once they received it they were able to clone my cars data to the used module and had it in the mail back to me by the next day. I installed the cloned module and am happy to report that everything works exactly as it did prior to the flooding and I couldn’t be happier. The local independent shop wanted twice the amount Karmanauto charges and insisted it be a new module as well. This worked out best for me and saved me a considerable amount of money.
