Can you repair or clone a BMW FRM (Footwell Module)?
Yes. Karman Auto repairs and clones BMW and MINI FRM3 / FRM3R footwell modules nationwide by mail-in. We read your VIN, mileage, CAS sync data, key data, and coding from the original FRM and either repair the EEPROM corruption on your unit or write the data to a matching donor — returns 100% plug-and-play. No dealer DIS / ISTA / ISTA-P coding required. BBB A+ Rated, 27 years bench-level work since 1999.
What is the BMW Footwell Module (FRM)?
The BMW FRM (Footwell Module), also called the Light Control Module, is the body electronics computer that controls exterior lighting, interior lighting, power windows, mirrors, central locking, alarm, and CAN/LIN bus communication for door modules. It’s located behind the kick panel in the driver’s footwell on most E-series BMWs and MINIs. BMW used three generations:
- FRM — earliest version, found on E60/E61/E63/E64 (2002-2010)
- FRM2 — mid-generation, found on E81/E82/E87/E88/E90/E91/E92/E93 (2006-2013)
- FRM3 / FRM3R — latest E-series version, found on E70/E71/E72/E84/E89/F-series early models, and most MINI R-series (2008-2017)
Common BMW FRM failure symptoms
- Power windows stop working — front, rear, or all
- Headlights stuck on or won’t turn off after engine off
- Loss of tail lights, brake lights, or turn signals
- Interior lights flicker or stay on
- Indicator lights / blinkers do nothing
- Door lock or central locking fails
- “Footwell Module” fault code on iDrive or scanner (60FB, A0F7, 9C30, A001 typical)
- Car won’t start — communication failure on K-CAN bus
- Heated mirrors, mirror fold, or power mirror functions stop
- Convertible top operations fail (E64, E88, E93)
What causes BMW FRM failures?
The #1 cause is EEPROM corruption. The FRM uses an internal 95160 EEPROM that stores coding and configuration data. Over time and across power cycles, the EEPROM data can corrupt — most commonly when the battery voltage drops during cranking. Once the data corrupts, the FRM throws communication errors and the symptoms above appear.
Other causes:
- Water damage — leaks from windshield seals or AC drains reach the footwell area
- Failed reflash — interrupted coding or programming during dealer/independent shop work
- Battery jump-start surges — voltage spikes during jump-starts can damage the EEPROM or microcontroller
- Internal microcontroller failure — rare, requires full module replacement
BMW FRM repair vs cloning — which do I need?
Both are mail-in bench services. Which one depends on the failure mode:
- Repair (EEPROM fix) — your FRM has a corrupted EEPROM but the hardware is fine. We read the EEPROM, repair the corrupted bytes, write it back. Your original module is returned working. Lower cost, faster turnaround.
- Clone (donor module) — your FRM is physically damaged (water, burnt, broken pins). You source a matching used donor FRM with the same part number. We read your VIN/coding/mileage data from your old module (even non-working), write it to the donor. Donor returns Plug-and-Play.
If you’re not sure, ship us the module and we’ll test it on the bench and recommend the right path before any work is done.
No BMW ISTA / DIS / ISTA-P coding required
After our repair or clone is installed, the FRM works in your car immediately. There’s no dealer-side step. No BMW ISTA-D or ISTA-P programming. No INPA coding. No NCS Expert dance. Your existing keys keep working — the CAS pairing data is preserved in the clone. Plug it in and drive.
What to send with your BMW FRM order
- Your original (failed) BMW or MINI FRM module — labeled “ORIGINAL”
- For clone orders: a matching donor FRM with the same part number on the case — labeled “DONOR.” Verify the part-number sticker before shipping. Mismatched part numbers cannot be cloned together.
- A note with your VIN, current vehicle mileage (from dashboard), and contact phone or email
If you’re unsure whether your donor part number matches, email a photo of both module labels before shipping and we’ll confirm compatibility first.
BMW FRM Repair & Clone — Frequently Asked Questions
Can you repair or clone a BMW FRM (Footwell Module)?
Yes. Karman Auto repairs and clones BMW and MINI FRM3 / FRM3R footwell modules nationwide by mail-in. 27 years of bench-level BMW work since 1999 — longer than most shops in this niche. BBB A+ Rated.
What is the difference between BMW FRM, FRM2, FRM3, and FRM3R?
FRM is earliest (E60/E61/E63/E64, 2002-2010). FRM2 is mid-gen (E81/E87/E90/E91/E92/E93, 2006-2013). FRM3 is latest E-series (E70/E71/E84/E89/F-series early/MINI R-series, 2008-2017). FRM3R is a revision of FRM3 with improved hardware. All four generations can be serviced.
How long does the mail-in BMW FRM repair take?
Typical bench turnaround is 24-48 hours from when we receive the module. We ship back the same day work is complete.
Do I need to send a donor module for BMW FRM repair?
No. Repair (EEPROM fix) only requires your original module. Donor module is only needed if your hardware is physically damaged and you need a clone instead of repair.
Will my BMW key still work after the FRM is fixed?
Yes. The FRM doesn’t store key data — keys are paired in the CAS module. Our repair or clone preserves CAS sync data so your existing keys keep working immediately.
Does the BMW FRM repair work on MINI Cooper / MINI Clubman?
Yes. The FRM3 module is shared between BMW E/F-series and MINI R/F-series cars including Cooper, Cooper S, Clubman, Countryman, Roadster, and Paceman. Same repair and clone process.
What are the symptoms of a failing BMW FRM?
Power windows stop working, headlights stuck on, loss of tail lights / brake lights / turn signals, interior lights flicker, door locks fail, fault codes 60FB / A0F7 / 9C30 / A001, communication failure on K-CAN bus. Worst case: car won’t start.
What causes BMW FRM failures?
The #1 cause is EEPROM corruption from low-voltage cranking events. Battery jump-start surges, water damage from windshield cowl drains, failed dealer reflash during recall service, and aging electrolytic capacitors are other causes.
Do you offer a warranty on BMW FRM repairs?
Yes. Lifetime warranty on the repair work itself. If the same fault returns, we re-repair at no charge — you only cover shipping.
What if my BMW FRM is completely dead (no power, no communication)?
We can still read the EEPROM directly at chip level even when the module won’t power up. That’s how Karman Auto has recovered VIN, mileage, and coding data from dead FRMs since 1999.
Where is the BMW FRM located in my car?
The FRM is located behind the kick panel in the driver’s footwell on most E-series BMWs and MINI R-series. Remove the kick panel trim, disconnect the connectors, and remove the FRM module from its mounting bracket.
Do I need BMW ISTA / ISTA-P / INPA coding after FRM repair?
No. After our repair or clone, the FRM works in your car immediately. No dealer-side step. No BMW ISTA-D or ISTA-P programming. No INPA coding. No NCS Expert. Plug it in and drive.
FRM repair vs FRM clone — which do I need?
Repair = EEPROM fix on your original module (hardware OK, just corrupt data). Clone = transfer data from your old module to a donor module (your hardware physically damaged). If unsure, ship the module and we’ll test on the bench and recommend before any work.
Why does the donor BMW FRM need the same part number?
The internal flash and EEPROM layout is tied to the BMW FRM part number. A donor with a different part number has a different memory map and cannot accept the cloned data correctly. Verify the part-number sticker before shipping.
