Toyota / Lexus immobilizer architecture (1998-2007)
1998-2007 Toyota and Lexus vehicles use a three-component immobilizer chain:
- Transponder key — embedded 4D chip (Texas Instruments DST or Megamos crypto family). Master keys (often black or blackish) can program additional keys; valet keys (typically grey or chrome) cannot
- Immobilizer ECU (IMMO Box) — separate small module under the steering column or behind the dash on most models. Stores the key pairing data and challenges the ECU on every start
- Engine ECU (PCM) — paired to the IMMO Box and stores the encrypted handshake routine. If the handshake fails, the ECU disables fuel injection
To start the engine, all three must be paired correctly. If any component is replaced, the chain breaks and the engine won’t start until re-paired.

- IMMO Off — remove the immobilizer routine from the ECU so the engine runs without any IMMO Box or key pairing (used for swaps, motor donor installs, race builds)

Q: I bought a used ECU. Will it work in my car?
A: Not without virginization or cloning. Used ECUs are paired to the donor car’s IMMO Box. Send us the used ECU and we virginize it; after install, it pairs to your IMMO Box on first start.
Q: Does IMMO Off work on all 1998-2007 Toyota/Lexus models?
A: On most. Some 2005+ models have deeper immobilizer integration that makes IMMO Off impractical — we’ll let you know after diagnosis. For most 1998-2004 models, IMMO Off is straightforward.
Q: Will my existing keys still work after virginization or cloning?
A: If you send us original key data with the IMMO Box, yes. If you virginize without keys (factory-blank state), you’ll need to program your keys back in via OBD or the dealer’s pre-1998 sequence.

Can you recover a Toyota IMMO Box that will not communicate?
Yes. Even when the IMMO Box is bricked at the K-line/CAN level we can still read the EEPROM directly at chip level on the bench. That is how we recover key pairing data from completely dead Toyota IMMO Boxes. 27 years of chip-level recovery.
Will my odometer change after Toyota/Lexus IMMO work?
No. The Toyota IMMO Box does not store odometer mileage. The Engine ECU may store a mileage record on some chassis — we transfer it exactly. We never roll back or alter mileage — same policy since 1999.
